Cannabis in cosmetics may sound like a gimmick, but it is much more than that.
More and more skincare products contain hemp extracts or even pure CBD. From creams and serums to shampoos and lip balms, the cosmetics industry is embracing the hemp plant. But why? In this blog post, we delve deep into the science behind hemp seed oil and CBD in skincare. We explain the benefits for your skin and hair, supported by research, and how House Jane uses this natural powerhouse in its skincare range.

The difference between hemp seed oil and CBD oil in cosmetics:

First, it's important to understand that "hemp" in cosmetics can mean two things. Hemp seed oil is the oil pressed from the seeds of industrial hemp. This oil doesn't contain cannabinoids like CBD or THC, at most only trace amounts. What it does contain are an abundance of nourishing ingredients:
omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, vitamin E, B vitamins and minerals.

Hemp seed oil is renowned for its skin-friendly properties: it doesn't clog pores, has mild anti-inflammatory properties, and is intensely hydrating. It's no wonder you find it in natural creams and hair products.

CBD oil, on the other hand, is extracted from the flowers and leaves of hemp and contains
Concentrated cannabidiol (CBD) (often diluted in a carrier oil such as coconut or hemp seed oil). This oil adds the specific effects of CBD to a product. Some cosmetic brands use actual CBD in their formulas (often advertised as "CBD-infused"), while others use only hemp seed oil but still display cannabis leaves on their packaging. The latter can be misleading: consumers see a cannabis leaf and think it contains CBD, while in some cases it's pure hemp seed oil.

House Jane is transparent about this, we clearly state whether a product
CBD contains only hemp seed oil as an ingredient.

Benefits of hemp seed oil for skin

Intensive hydration: Hemp seed oil is a rich, natural moisturizer. Due to its high
Its content of essential fatty acids (omega 3 and 6) helps strengthen the skin barrier and retain moisture. Best of all, the oil absorbs quickly and doesn't clog pores, even on oily skin. This makes it suitable for all skin types, from dry to acne-prone.

Anti-inflammatory and soothing: The fatty acid profiles in hemp oil (including gamma-linolenic acid, GLA) have anti-inflammatory effects. Redness and irritation may decrease with the use of hemp seed oil. Many people with sensitive or inflamed skin (e.g., eczema or rosacea) experience relief because the oil soothes the skin. There are indications that topical use of hemp oil can reduce itching and swelling by modulating the inflammatory response in the skin.

Nourishing and anti-aging: Thanks to the antioxidants (such as vitamin E) in hemp seed oil, it helps protect the skin from free radicals. This can prevent premature aging. It also provides oleic and linoleic acids, which keep skin supple and improve its appearance. In the long term, regular use of hemp seed oil can contribute to a firmer, smoother skin texture.

Benefits of CBD for the skin

Anti-inflammatory effect : Like hemp oil, CBD has strong anti-inflammatory effects
Properties. CBD works through the endocannabinoid system in the skin, where CB₂ receptors are located on immune cells and keratinocytes. Research suggests that topically applied CBD can reduce inflammatory markers in the skin. This has led to significant interest in CBD for skin conditions such as acne (which has an inflammatory component), psoriasis, and eczema. In a small experiment, a CBD ointment reduced redness and symptoms in psoriasis and eczema patients without causing irritation. The idea is that CBD could offer a gentle alternative to cortisone creams for certain inflammatory conditions, provided further studies confirm this.

Anti-acne and sebum regulation: Acne is partly caused by excessive sebum production and inflammation of the sebaceous glands. A highly cited study in The Journal of Clinical Investigation (2014) demonstrated that CBD can reduce sebum production in human skin cells while simultaneously inhibiting inflammatory responses in the sebaceous glands. CBD acts as a skin "normalizer": it calms overactive glands and prevents pores from becoming inflamed. This gives CBD potential as an ingredient in anti-acne products. Combine this with the aforementioned calming effects, and you can understand why CBD is considered a promising weapon against blemishes.

Antioxidant and skin protection: CBD is a powerful antioxidant. It can neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress in the skin. This is important because free radicals (caused by UV radiation, pollution, and stress) are a major cause of skin aging and cell damage. By adding antioxidants like CBD to a cream or serum, it can help protect the skin from environmental damage. Some studies even suggest that CBD can partially mitigate the effects of UV damage and promote skin cell healing (for example, by modulating collagen production). Because of this, CBD is often positioned as an anti-aging booster in luxury skincare alongside vitamins and retinol.

Antipruritic and Pain Relieving: The endocannabinoid system is also involved in regulating itch and pain signals in the skin. CBD, through activation of CB₂ receptors on nerve endings and immune cells in the skin, may have antipruritic effects. In a small study of patients with chronic itching (pruritus), topical CBD application significantly reduced itch scores. Similarly, users report that a CBD muscle balm provides relief from superficial pain, such as muscle pain or joint pain just beneath the skin (think arthritic fingers). There's even an approved CBD gel (with a prescription) in other countries for arthritis pain. All of this suggests that CBD could be useful in topical products that offer relief, such as a post-workout massage gel or a soothing cream for irritated skin.

What does the dermatologist say? Skin experts are closely following the CBD trend. Dr. Nima Gharavi, dermatologist, indicates that CBD can play a role in skin hydration and can reduce inflammation, and that it could therefore help with dry skin or certain inflammatory skin conditions. At the same time, he emphasizes that more studies are needed to demonstrate a direct effect on skin quality. His quote summarizes the current state of affairs: "If CBD can provide the same anti-inflammatory effects as a corticosteroid without the side effects, then that is promising for the treatment of, for example, eczema." Currently, that "if" is still the subject of research, but the initial results are optimistic.

House Jane's approach

At House Jane, we view hemp and CBD as valuable natural ingredients for "clean beauty." Our skincare line includes products based on hemp seed oil, such as hydrating face creams and body oils that benefit from the nourishing, gentle properties of hemp oil. We also offer CBD-enriched skincare products: for example, we have a Tattoo-care cream with 300 mg CBD + 100 mg CBG, designed to soften and repair new tattoos. This cream combines the anti-inflammatory properties of cannabinoids with soothing ingredients like aloe vera. Our Pure CBD Patches (skin patches with 20 mg CBD) can also be considered a cosmetic/wellness product: they deliver CBD through the skin into the bloodstream and can be applied locally to a sore muscle or joint for targeted care. We also offer hemp lip balms, CBD massage oil, and even CBD scalp shampoo. All of these products are manufactured within EU law, meaning they are legal, do not contain THC above the permitted standard, and are dermatologically tested/approved where necessary.
